4D ULTRASOUND IN MALAGA

4D Ultrasound

4D Ultrasound in Malaga

A 4D Ultrasound is a prenatal scan that allows to capture not only still images, but also a video of the foetus inside the uterus, which complements the 2D image of a conventional ultrasound.

This type of ultrasound scan provides greater detail about the state of the foetus and its motor activity, from limb movements to facial expressions. On the other hand, by scanning volume, it allows us to know not only the dimensions of any organ, but also its position in the foetus' body.

It can be performed on medical indication, mainly when congenital defects are suspected that do not show up on a standard 2D and 3D scan or as an elective procedure.

The Pérez-Bryan Gynaecological Clinic in Málaga has this technology, where the 3D image goes through a very fast process that uses a large volume of data to reconstruct the images, giving a final moving or live-action view.

At what stage of pregnancy can a 4D ultrasound be performed?

As with conventional 2D ultrasound, factors such as the position of the baby, maternal size and the amount of amniotic fluid play an important role in the quality of the image. Often a good image can be obtained, but not always.

In order to obtain an adequate image in the 4D ultrasoundThe surface should have plenty of fluid around it. It is for this reason that this type of ultrasound is preferably performed between 26 and 36 weeks of pregnancy, as there is more amniotic fluid and the foetus has developed most of the soft tissues around the face and the images can be obtained with great precision.

However, 4D imaging can be performed at any stage beyond 12 weeks, in particular between 18 and 20 weeks gestation, in women at high risk of malformations, or when details of any abnormality or detail detected by conventional ultrasound are to be clarified.

Usefulness of 4D ultrasound

All pregnant women can choose to undergo a 4D ultrasound. However, doctors recommend it especially if there are any suspected birth defects, genetic abnormalities or medical conditions that may affect the mother.

Conventional 2D or two-dimensional ultrasound, on the other hand, captures images of the internal organs and bones of the foetus and is usually sufficient for most of the problems that can be diagnosed at this stage.

As with any other 2D or 3D ultrasound scan during the pregnancy4D ultrasound can be used for:

  • Confirm normal foetal development
  • Confirm gestational age
  • Check for foetal abnormalities
  • Quantifying the amniotic fluid
  • Detect or confirm multiple pregnancies.
  • Look for other problems that may affect the pregnancy.
  • Check the position of the placenta.

How is the procedure carried out?

To perform this procedure, the patient lies on an examination table and a gel is applied, which is responsible for transporting the sound waves, in the same way as with conventional ultrasound.

A special transducer is then placed over the uterus and moved to produce images that are instantly displayed on a monitor that has special software that provides the moving images in real time.

The procedure can take 15-20 minutes, is painless and very comfortable. It does not require any type of anaesthesia or prior preparation on the part of the patient.

Advantages of 4D ultrasound

4D ultrasound is often used to view the surface of the face or other fetal structures which, when surrounded by amniotic fluid, allow for a very realistic visualisation.

It also allows images to be displayed that are easier to understand for those who are not used to looking at conventional 2D ultrasound and can show incredible, realistic images to expectant parents.

Risks of 4D ultrasound

There are no risks to the foetus with this type of scan. 3D and 4D ultrasounds only use sound waves to look inside the baby in the same way as regular 2D ultrasound.
